Non-Aesthetic Trends Sweeping the Design World in 2024

Not all trends in design have to do with color and aesthetics.  Across the industry we are seeing less and less of the "fast fashion" of home furnishings and design elements.  In fact, we are seeing more investment in statement pieces that will stand the test of time. New laws and advancements in technology are also affecting design trends, especially in the window coverings arena.

Trend #1: High Interest Rates Mean People are Staying Put

With the current interest rates and property values, people are crunching the numbers and often realizing they are better off to update their current space rather than to move to a newer home.  Even if you can’t do an full remodel, you can still update your space by adding just a few new pieces, updating window treatments and soft finishes like pillows, or mixing in new accessories.

Trend #2: More Homeowners are Investing in Design Plans

More clients are choosing to work with a professional designer not only while developing a plan for a remodel, but also when selecting their soft finishes.  This is an excellent idea and helps you ensure your money is being well-spent on pieces that work together and look good in your space. There is nothing worse than spending a chunk of change on a piece just to find out that it isn’t the right size or colors for your space. I can work alongside your designer to create the soft finishes for your space. I can also refer you to local designers that I trust.

Trend #3: Technology is Changing the Way We Design Homes

Technology is a major player in the window covering industry specifically. New child safety laws regarding operation cords went into effect in June 2024. Integrating motors into your window treatments instead of operation cords is an easy way to bring your window treatments up to code. In fact, it is a reason we are seeing motorization skyrocket. You can retrofit many of the elements of your home to automate them, but it is a good idea to consider the window treatments early in the plans rather than after-the-fact. Motorized window treatments can be hard-wired and rods can be recessed. Window coverings can also be integrated into a hub that can makes everything voice-controlled. Even a specific schedule or mood can be set with the touch of a button.

Trends can be a good thing, especially when it means we are increasing the safety of our environment. The investment in updating your current window treatments and soft finishes and using a designer to help you do it, is well worth it. We are here to help.
