3 Ways the Right (or Wrong) Color Impacts Your Home for Better or Worse
Recently I was looking at Reddit with my husband as we giggled about the overly neutral renovations people posted. I quickly noticed that the rooms were often taken from a feeling of warm and inviting, to cold and colorless.
Color is an important aspect, even in the most neutral of spaces. It can truly affect how people feel in a home, and how you feel in your space. If you surround yourself in colors that you love and make YOU happy, then just being in that space will uplift your mood.
Step #1: Understanding the Usual Associations of Each Unique Color
Color can make such a difference in the feel of a home. People feel more energized around brighter, warmer colors like yellows and reds. Blues and greens can bring feelings of calm. Orange can stimulate the creativity.
Of course the colors chosen for someone else’s space will be different than the colors I choose for my space. Everyone's experience of color is personal. The key is to find the colors the homeowners like. If you are unsure of where to start, Houzz is an excellent launch point. The site (and app) are free to use and you can peruse an endless number of pictures of completed spaces put together by designers. By saving the ones that appeal to a homeowner, it is easy to then see the similarities in their designs and colors. I’m always surprised how inspiring the design and color schemes are.
Step #2: Assessing the Wide Array of Color Variations Available to You
There are so many options in color choice, but keep in mind that color can be overdone too. Using color sparingly can create a feeling of a neutral space without making it a boring space. You can just paint the walls or use one piece of furniture with color. Just colorful pillows on a neutral sofa or a bold colorful window treatment is enough to breathe life into a neutral space.
We can help homeowners implement the color palate that appeals to them in a way that is not overwhelming. We can also refer homeowners to designers who can take the guesswork out of it too and are masters at mixing colors and textures in a space.
Step #3: Presenting a Pretty, Personalized Whole-Home Color Palette
Keeping a color flowing throughout a space is as key as using the right shade of a color. Some colors are more difficult to use, yellow is definitely one of these. In one space it can feel sunny and warm, and in another it can feel like a school bus. Even in lights at different times of day, a color can take on a different feeling. It's important to look at swatches at different times of day in the room it will be.
One of the most important things, though, is to consider carrying a color throughout the home. It can be jarring to have a blue wall in a living room and a yellow kitchen or red dining room. Change up the shade of blue throughout the space or use a similar shade of another cool color like green as you move from one space to another in the home makes a home feel cohesive.
