What You Need to Know Before Hiring a Window Treatment Designer
When you invite someone into your home to provide a service, there are so many unknowns. Do they really know what they are doing? Will they understand your vision? Will the project go smoothly and be completed when you expect it to be completed? Will they really be able to provide their service within the budget? Are they going to be pushy?
I have a few insider tips about how to know you have a great designer.
Insider Tip 1: They Have Seen it All
First, understand that designers have (almost) seen it all. They should not be offended by the current state of your home. Small, large, dusty, under construction, messy . . . it's not a big deal. Obviously they need to be able to access and to measure the windows, but you should never feel judged when bringing a professional into your home.
Insider Tip 2: They Are Great Listeners
Most people think the biggest topic of conversation at a design consultation will be centered around aesthetics such as fabric choice. While that is a major piece, there are other considerations. Great designers will address the "why" behind the design as well. With window treatments specifically, they should ask questions to determine if the treatments are for privacy, temperature control, security, light control, comfort, or purely aesthetic. A professional will be taking notes as the design details are determined. It's a lot to think about. Rest assured, it is okay not to know all the answers. That is why you are hiring a professional.
Insider Tip 3: They Are Budget Conscious
Just like cars, there is a large spectrum of pricing. Of course custom is going to be more expensive than what is found in stores. That doesn't mean that your budget should be disregarded. Of course plan for some wiggle room, but a professional will be a steward of your money. Trust that they understand your budget.
Insider Tip 4: They Provide Consultations
Professionals will offer a consultation. Cozy Giraffe offers free consultations by text, phone, or email to make sure we are the right fit for your needs. A designer should also offer a consultation to make sure they are the right fit for your project. To truly get a detailed project moving, however, they will need to see the project in-person.
Insider Tip 5: They Are There for You
They should be in it to the end. When the project is completed, the end goal should not only be a beautifully finished space, but the room should bring joy when you are in it. The best way to do that is to ensure that the process goes smoothly from start to finish, quickly addressing any issues along the way.
